There’s an exciting (yet terrifying) point in every business owner’s life… When you realize it’s time to graduate from a DIY (or “do it with minimal help, preferably inexpensively”) business website and into a professionally built website.

Now, before the anxiety of all of those horror stories about websites gets you down, let’s go over four tips so that you get the right person to revamp, build, or tweak your website.

Hiring a business website developer in 4 easy steps

    1. Define what success is for you

Every website project has different needs. So decide on the specific outcome of your project.

Because once success is defined, that’ll help you narrow down the field of players so you can get the right person, in the right field, for your right job.

Maybe your project is getting a redesign. Or maybe you need to rebrand with new colors. Perhaps your website is having a technical issue caused by a specific plugin that needs to be addressed. Once you know what the problem is, you can more easily find the right person to help. That way you can focus on results, rather than wasting your time with the wrong people or shiny objects.

    2. Talk to at least 2-3 specialists about your project

Okay, it takes time to find and setup time to talk to multiple people. But how will you know if you’ve got the right one if you don’t have anything to compare it to? Talk to at least 2-3 people in the right field for your project.

    Why?

Well, because that way you’ll get a better sense for the stylistic approaches each may take. And you’ll get a better idea for what the different price points entail. But most importantly, it’ll help you find someone that you can communicate with, work with, and really partner with.

A word of advice… it may be that (once you get into things and figure out what you need to achieve your goal) you end up needing more time, resources, or budget than you planned for. That’s another reason I recommend talking to 2-3 (or more) specialists; you’ll be getting a second, third, or fourth opinion to make sure you’ve gotten all of your ducks in a row.

    3. Take time to be picky

One of the great things about the world of website builders, designers, and beyond is that there are a lot of people to choose from! You don’t have to just choose the first designer or developer who returns your call – you can be picky!

So be picky. Choose someone who understands your needs, your business, and your vision. Then make the time and take the time to work through a systematized process so you can get the results you want.

One final reminder… make sure that you’re picking the right person for the job. Frequently I find business owners who are employing a technical designer or developer to put content up on their website. A much better use of resources would be to employ a VA (virtual assistant) to handle that particular project – and save the technical guru for glitches, programming, or whatever else.

    4. Choose someone who brings value to the table

Once we’ve gone through each of the previous steps, it’s time to make that decision. And here’s a few qualities to know you’ve picked the right person for the project:

    • They’ll see your business
    • They’ll understand your goals
    • They’ll offer constructive, useful feedback
    • They’ll give industry-specific ideas and advice to advance your business

At the end of the day, you need a website where people can interact with your business. You need a team who understands and supports your vision. And you need all of this so you can continue to offer your unique value, services, and products to the world.
