A question that I’m frequently asked is this: “Does my business need social media for business in its marketing plan?” Well, the short answer is yes, but there’s a whole lot to it than just that yes. And so before you assign your marketing team to go create a new Facebook or Twitter account, let’s cover the 4 things you need in place beforehand so you can get serious about social media for business.

Why does any business need these 4 parts before diving into social media for business? Because if your business isn’t laser focused, then any social media campaign won’t be as successful as it could otherwise be. So let’s make sure your business is set up for lasting success – both in person and on social media.

1: Your business needs a well-defined product or service

If your business is established and has been around for a few years, then congratulations. You’ve more than likely already got this covered. You know your audience and you know what they need – and how to get it to them.

On the other hand, a lot of new (or newer) businesses don’t have such a perfectly defined product or service. And that’s just fine, too! But while you’re getting there, remember to consult with clients, find ways to add value, and over time then we can really define your products and services.

2: Your business needs systems in place to follow up with leads and contacts

If you can’t keep up with the leads you’ve already got, do you really want to dive into social media and flood your business with more leads?

That doesn’t make any sense, right? So first let’s make sure you’ve got the systems in place to follow up and guide those new leads through your process to become solid sales and customers.

Once those systems are in place (and all of those extra business cards are finally off of your desk), then we can tackle more on social media for business.

3: Consistent content creation is key in social media for business

Content comes in a lot of flavors: blogs, vlogs (video blogs), podcasts, newsletters, and more. So the question here is this: is your business regularly and consistently publishing new content?

If so, congratulations. That’s going to make your social media for business marketing campaign a TON easier!!

If not, don’t stress! We just need to add content creation to your “to do” list. Why? Because having content creation already handled allows you to focus your efforts on connecting with people (aka getting leads and making sales). So let’s get a content creation handled so we can move on to sharing it already.

4: Set up your email list for regular sharing and connecting with your audience

Building and having a solid email list is hugely important! In fact, if you haven’t already started on this, then you’re probably not quite ready for social media yet.

On the other hand, if you already have an email list (and it’s well defined), then make sure you’re using your consistently created content to communicate with them regularly. And once you’re there, then we can truly and successfully dive into marketing and social media for business.

Once you’ve got these 4 key components in place, your business will be a well-oiled machine that’s ready to get serious with social media for business. And this is where you’ll see the best ROI possible on social media.
